Eurostar Celebrates Its 20th Birthday

November 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the Eurostar high-speed rail service between London and Paris, which now takes as little as two hours 15 minutes.

The inaugural Eurostar journey took place in the same week as the launch of the National Lottery, and around and the same time peace broke out in Northern Ireland. As such, Eurostar didn’t particularly grab the headlines in 1994.

Eurostar began life departing from London’s Waterloo station.

Eurostar then moved to it’s new high-speed home at St. Pancras International station in 2007.

As Eurostar celebrates its 20th birthday, its CEO Nicolas Petrovic unveiled a new batch of trains that are designed to be faster, more comfortable and more efficient.

Launching later in 2015, the e320 trains (built by German firm Siemens) will reach a top speed of 320kmh, and will carry 17% more passengers to take the potential total number to 894.

Eurostar is not dwelling on its success in the past, however, which has seen the train operator carry over 145 million customers since it opened in 1994.

Frankfurt To London High-Speed Rail Link Put On Hold

The high-speed Frankfurt-London rail project has been put on hold by Germany’s Deutsche Bahn, after delivery delays on Siemens’ ICE trains.

Deutsche Bahn and will focus now on routes to Brussels and Paris, a top manager at the state-owned firm said.

Deutsche Bahn had hoped to open the high-speed route last year and said 400 mile journey would take five hours.

We have not entirely given up the goal of going to London. But for now we are concentrating on going to Brussels and Paris,” Andreas Busemann, head of production at Deutsche Bahn, told journalists.

Cross-Channel train services from the UK to Europe are operated by Eurostar, majority-owned by French state-owned SNCF.

Eurostar is also planning to start direct services from London to Frankfurt and Cologne in the next few years, once it receives its own order of trains from Siemens.

Snowfall is burying the Alps

Last year all the talk was about how the Alps were drying up, and how global warming meant that avid skiers had to venture to North America to get their powder fix. What a difference a year makes.

Many ski resorts in the Alps currently have snow depths of over 400cm on the upper slopes, and whilst that is great news for those venturing to ski resorts across the Alps, it also brings an avalanche risk, so take care peeps. According to welove2ski, road links to St. Anton, Lech and Ischgl have all been cut off due to heavy snowfall.

Driving conditions are also difficult in Switzerland, with accumulated snowfall since Thursday reaching more than two metres in some parts of the country. Train travel has also become difficult, with many snow train destinations such as Bourg St Maurice being cut off.

The freak weather was due to a storm named Andrea. She started on Thursday and continued for three consecutive days, with winds reaching up to 200 km/h. As a result of the snow and winds, the avalanche risk remains 4/5 in most ski areas.
